About
The Sisters of Charity built the St. Martin DePorres Center as a school for African Americans in 1887. Four years later a chapel dedicated to St. Peter Claver was dedicated on the second floor. This chapel served the community from 1891 to 1948. St. Peter Claver Church holds the distinction of being the first Roman Catholic parish establish for the Catholic African American community in the Diocese of Lexington. In 1947 construction began on the original church at Fourth and Jefferson, completed and blessed on December 8, 1947, with formal dedication on February 13, 1949. Construction began on the new St. Martin DePorres Education on July 1, 2013 and was dedicated on June 27, 2015.
